Schoolboy raises £500 for Gateshead SCBU

Thanks to the fundraising of one generous teenager, infants at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead can now benefit from a diaphanoscope. Christian Herbert was born by emergency c-section and spent time in special care after his mum Karen was rushed to hospital and had to undergo a blood transfusion to save her life.

Mother and baby went on to make full recoveries and now, 13 years later, the pair returned to the special care baby unit to be reunited with the nursing staff who cared for them and to present a cheque for £500.

The money is to be used to buy a diaphanoscope, which lights up the small veins to make it easier to draw blood or insert an IV cannula. It can also be used in the chest area to identify whether the

baby has developed a pneumothorax.
