HIE community to benefit as PEEPS charity is awarded funding
Peeps is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those affected by hypoxic ischaemic encepalopathy (HIE). In July it was awarded multi-year funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.
Peeps was set up in 2018 by Sarah and Steve, whose daughter Heidi was born in 2015. Heidi had HIE and subsequently spent time on an NICU. Friends of Steve and Sarah affectionately referred to Heidi as Heidi-Peeps and, following their NICU journey, the couple set up their charity PEEPS. The vision is that every person in the UK touched by HIE can access appropriate support at any time. They aim to raise awareness of HIE and ensure families affected know what it is and how the charity can support them.
This is the first time the charity has been awarded multi-year funding, which will cover costs for their project Peeps Together – Connecting our Community over the next three years. The money will increase the support that is available to families, in particular running more face-to-face events (Peeps Together sessions) based on feedback from families wanting to be able to connect in person and on a local level.
The National Lottery Community Fund distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK.
