BAPM to draft Palliative care framework for consultation
BAPM is inviting comments on the draft document Recognising uncertainty: an integrated framework for palliative care in perinatal medicine.
Consultation is now open on the new document that provides guidance to support healthcare professionals working in perinatal medicine. The framework has been developed with the Association of Paediatric Palliative Medicine (APPM). It establishes an integrated framework for palliative care that will be appropriate for all cases where there is uncertainty about the outcome for an infant. A model is proposed that emphasises a combination of approaches to care, that is not only end of life care. It recognises the uncertainty that exists for each baby and family. Alongside treatments that aim to cure, it incorporates a total approach to care that is active and to be delivered from the point of diagnosis. This highlights the importance of palliative care being ‘everyone’s business’ and offers guidance to a multidisciplinary team that includes community services, specialist services and the perinatal team covering both antenatal and neonatal services. The deadline for comments is 24 May 2024.
