EFCNI launches new factsheet on breastfeeding a preterm baby

Breastfeeding a Preterm Baby highlights the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for preterm babies. Moreover, it aims to help caregivers and parents overcome the challenges associated with breastfeeding and to facilitate informed decision-making about the provision of mother’s own milk (MOM).

The four-page document from the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) explains:

  • why nutritional support in preterm babies is challenging
  • how preterm babies benefit from MOM
  • the way feeding abilities develop and how preterm birth can impact on this
  • how healthcare professionals can help with optimising milk production
  • the importance of monitoring growth and weight gain after hospital discharge.
