EFCNI launches new factsheet on fortification in preterm and sick infants

The new European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) factsheet on human milk fortification in preterm and sick infants is now available to download from the EFCNI website.

Fortification: Nutritional Additives for Preterm and Sick Babies, which was first presented at the recent Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) in Vienna, examines this important topic in preterm and sick babies’ nutrition, providing an overview of when and why fortification is needed as well as the types and components of fortification in preterm and sick babies. The four-page document looks at how and when fortification is administered, how fortifiers are made and standardised versus individualised (adjustable or targeted) fortification.
