Hospitals awarded government funding to invest in safety equipment

More than 90 NHS Trusts will receive a share of £2m to buy new equipment, including ultrasound machines and mother and baby monitoring equipment, so problems can be detected and addressed earlier.

This is part of the government's campaign to halve the number of stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal deaths and brain injuries occurring during or soon after birth, by 2030.

Applications for funding were considered by the Department of Health and representatives from the Royal College of Midwives and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Among the hospitals benefitting from this money is South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, which received £27,000 for improving neonatal outcomes in babies requiring respiratory support at birth. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust also received £27,000 for its project 'keeping babies safe, managing jaundice effectively' and Birmingham Women's NHS Foundation Trust received £30,000 for neonatal resuscitation equipment.
