May is England’s least favourite month for baby making

Pregnacare by Vitabiotics used NHS birth data dating back to 2013 to identify the number of births each year per region in England and reveal which regions are showing the biggest ‘baby boom’. The study also looked at the gender split and seasonal birth rates. Here are some of the findings:

  • London is welcoming more newborns than anywhere else in the country; the West Midlands comes in second. The North East has the lowest baby boom score.
  • On average, February is when the least babies are born in England (6.79%). This means May is the least prime baby-making month.
  • October is the prime baby-making month as most babies are born in July (7.77%).
  • Most male babies in England are born in May and most baby girls are born in February.
  • There is some evidence to suggest a mini baby boom during lockdown and the pandemic as most regions saw an increase in births between 2020 and 2021.
