Invasive E. coli infection in infants under three months: A study showing trends in incidence and antibiotic resistance

This article assessed the incidence and antibiotic resistance patterns of infants under the age of three months in the neonatal unit of the level three neonatal unit in Middlesbrough. We provide insights in current trends in the era of established maternal intrapartum Group B Streptococcus prophylaxis and our results can aid optimising local antimicrobial stewardship programmes.

Congenital tuberculosis: A marker of shift in demographics

This article describes a rare case of congenital miliary tuberculosis in a preterm infant in the UK, highlighting the diagnostic challenges posed by its non-specific presentation and rarity. It explores how changing demographics and global migration contribute to rising tuberculosis incidence in low-incidence countries, increasing the relevance of vertical transmission. Detailed maternal history, early multidisciplinary collaboration and prompt initiation of anti-tubercular therapy to improve outcomes for both mother and infant are important.

Hypertriglyceridemia in extremely preterm infants on parenteral nutrition

In this study we collected and analysed data for extremely preterm infants receiving parental nutrition and found that hypertriglyceridemia is relatively common and occurs more often in those with lower gestational age, lower birth weight and chorioamnionitis. Elevated and recurrent high triglyceride levels are associated with higher mortality and increased risk of threshold retinopathy of prematurity requiring treatment. The study recommends close triglyceride monitoring and protocol-based lipid adjustment to optimise growth while reducing complications.

 FREE  To KP or not to KP: a retrospective cohort study

Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of neonatal mortality; however, it is also acknowledged that current guidelines overtreat this condition. Some units across the UK have transitioned to the Kaiser Permanente (KP) sepsis risk calculator (KPSRC) in an effort to reduce unnecessary early onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) screens. This study compares the sensitivity and specificity of the KPSRC to current guidance using a retrospective cohort approach. It aims to identify whether the use of the KPSRC has the potential to reduce unnecessary bed days without resulting in a potential increase in missed cases of sepsis.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde trials screening for spinal muscular atrophy for all newborns

The Scottish Government and pharmaceutical company Novartis are funding an evaluation to assess how well screening can detect spinal muscular atrophy earlier, allowing babies to receive treatment as soon as possible.The hope is that this test could enable earlier treatment and improve life chances.
