Expanded SCBU opens at Prince Charles Hospital

A major expansion at Prince Charles Hospital in Wales, funded by an investment of £6m, has increased the capacity of the SCBU to 19 cots, redeveloped two delivery theatres and created six en suite delivery rooms that include one birthing pool.

The expansion forms part of the maternity changes in South Wales, which affect the delivery of maternity and neonatal care at the Royal Glamorgan and Prince Charles Hospitals.

The changes will take place on 9 March and will mean that all specialist maternity and neonatal care will only be available in the Cwm Taf Health Board area from Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. Maternity services will still be provided at Royal Glamorgan Hospital but they will be provided by midwives, and not by doctors.
